Sales jobs have quite a bad reputation in some crowds, however, a career in sales is one of the most interesting careers that someone could decide to peruse. The challenges and the rewards, if you are with a good company can be second to none.

One of the things that seems to put a lot off sales jobs from the get go is that they often have a low basic starting salary. This often would not be enough for the average person to live off and in that knowledge some people look no further. The OTE (on target earnings) are often very high and this can sometime be so high that they are perceived as unrealistic despite been quite achievable and this acts as another barrier to entry for people who have not really looked into the finer details of sales jobs!

When people who are looking into sales jobs are put off by the basic salary they should also take into account that the basic salary disclaimer often sits alongside a comment which explains that commission earnings are uncapped.

Uncapped commissions basically means that as long as you are selling the product your actual earnings are going to be on the increase with every sale you make.

If you have no experience in sales then the company taking you on will no doubt offer training and its in their interest to make sure you are good at it, remember, when you earn commission on a sale the company will make a lot more. It is definitely not in the interest of any sales focused company to have an employee that that is simply taking home the basic pay each month and perhaps this is where the pressure comes in?

People worry that they will not be able to sell and will not be able to achieve above the basic pay, this in turn would mean that they are not really an asset to the company and from there you ask yourself how secure your job would be? There are people out there who are just not cut out for sales but in reality if you don’t try something how will you know if you are good at it?
